Facility Component Overview
Whisper Rocks Residence will be doubled into the empty lot across from Harwood Museum in Taos Historic District, New
Mexico. Here this space will act as a rehabilitation and recreation center for teens/young adults (age 13-25) who struggle with substance abuse addiction as well as depression. (Re)Center will act as transition space from the constraint within a
rehabilitation center to the freedom within the real world. This project will work hand in hand with the Taos community as well as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). The space is broken up into three sections: the rehabilitation center, indoor recreation center, and outdoor recreation center. Here the two (rehabilitation and recreation) will help support each other within an interactive environment. The space will consist of both public and private areas, and many opportunities to interact with nature.

Design Goals and Limitations
The greatest advantage of this space and design is that it is located on 26,000 SF of empty lot, this allows an outward expansion at any time. The second is that the building is made from adobe, this allows for a cheap building material in which construction can be done by those who are not skilled as well. It also gives the community of Taos an opportunity to design and build a center near their homes with their own hands. However the biggest problem will be that the interior space of the building is very limited and narrow. According to the Space Allocation Chart, it can be seen that a basis of 11,426.25 SF (excluding the outdoor field and swimming pool) is needed to complete this project. This runs into the issue with the interior space, since the current building only consists of 11,276 SF. Other considerations will be the fact that the design is combining a rehabilitation center with a recreation center. How can the concept attract those who would rather not interact with a student in “rehab,” or have the student suffering from depression/addiction interact with the general public. Engaging the patients may be a hard factor within the environmental aspect of the design. These patients are very emotional and going through a difficult stage in life. However this problem may actually help solve the problem as well. Since the patients reside to substance abuse as an escape from society, the recreational aspect of the design can provide an alternative escape from reality.
Stakeholders:
Users- Patients will gain real life experiences and learn new activities. The general public will also get access to learn new activities as well as have a new area of hang out.
Community- This building will allow more jobs (whether it be for construction needs, security, instructor/teacher requests) to the community and another way of teaching society of their culture, architectural design, craft and history. Tourists visiting Taos, New Mexico are also given a new must do activity during their trip.
Co-Creators- Therapists, vendors, local construction work
Investors- NAMI can spread the awareness of mental illnesses, Taos Community can promote more tourist attractions
Earth- Sustainable building material that is very eco-friendly, more users enjoying the outdoors then spending time indoors
From the programming information gathered, the design will now benefit into better understanding the space and collecting pieces that can potentially fit. Understanding which spaces need to be adjacency will help in a great matter. Also ADA regulations, acoustics, natural light, and the mix of indoor and outdoor interaction will greatly come to play in order to use the space in the best ability.
